The question is often asked - What is New Media?   (This is quite fun - interact with a Quicktime Panorama.)

The simple answer is that it comprises all the new digital systems that have been developed over the last ten years for the transmission and delivery of moving pictures and audio.

Deciding on the right delivery system for your company's product is complicated further by the fact that all these technologies are continually evolving.  Please e-mail media@auteur.tv for more comprehensive information.

CD Roms

These have been the backbone of the Audio-Visual industry to date. It has proved quite possible to produce sophisticated corporate programmes on these discs and distribute them to sales teams and clients. Their advantage has been that nearly every computer and lap-top has a CD player installed - their disadvantage is that they can only hold a small amount of information (650mb) which means that encoded video pictures have to be small and the quality often leaves a lot to be desired.

DVD

Currently over 120 million players sold worldwide, disc manufacturers are claiming a 100 year life for their products - so this is a format which is great for archiving material. The major benefit of DVD is its storage capacity - a single layered disc (4.7gb) can transmit a 100 minute feature film at broadcast quality and still have space for extra information. DVDs can also be used for storage of data (DVD Rom) and dual layer discs can hold 9Gb of information. As more and more computers have DVD players installed in them, this format is increasingly becoming the delivery platform of choice.

Forget PowerPoint! Give your audience top grade images and sound in your presentations. Increasingly in seminars and at exhibitions, companies are realising that with just the laptop, a small portable projector and a screen, they have interactive cinema at their fingertips and the audience in the palm of their hand.

STREAMING MEDIA FOR WEB SITES

Putting live action media on web sites is not complicated but it does need to be understood. The primary factor to consider is the end-user's connection speed. Broadband has taken off here in the UK as the price has come down, but many domestic users still only have a 56k modem as their gateway to the internet. This means that to present video clips to the widest possible audience, several versions of the same content need to be produced.

Check your Connection Speed:- 28k - 56k - Broadband

There are two principal ways of delivering media to your audience -

STREAMING or DOWNLOADING and each has its pros and cons...

Streaming Media is the only way to transmit a live feed.

Streaming Media uses no space on viewer's hard disk.

Streaming Media requires the Web host to have a streaming server.

Streaming Media breaks up if data rate exceeds connection speed.

(Most of the video clips on this site are streamed)

Download Media requires no special web host server software.

Download Media gets through no matter how slow the connection.

Download Media puts copy of the movie on consumers hard disk - you lose control.

Another great use of this compression technology is the ability to send Video files across the world quickly - no longer is it necessary to upload to costly satellites. This interview with opera conductor Richard Hickox was filmed in the morning and transmitted in Australia the next day. (Click on image to view)
