AUTEUR started trading in 2001 as Auteur DVD. At that time DVD production was prohibitively expensive and only the largest Post houses in London had facilities for DVD authoring. Auteur (from the French – Author) DVD was set up to provide affordable MPEG2 encoding and duplication of DVD-R discs.

Within a year, the landscape had changed with Apple’s entry into the DVD market and Auteur moved tangentially into real-time Web Streaming, using a QuickTime Streaming Server.

A pioneer of this technology in the UK, it was a fast learning curve. The codecs available for compressing video were still in their infancy and by today’s standards, the picture quality was poor – but at the time it offered an exciting solution to film-makers and artists who wanted to deliver their videos globally, in real time.

The New Media landscape was evolving at breakneck speed. The social networking sites had taken off and YouTube became the portal for sharing films. iTunes podcasts offered a download option for video and with the advent of the 3G mobile network, the ability to deliver content onto handheld devices became reality.

The word “monetise” emerged – how could the creators and distributors persuade consumers to pay for the on-line content they were viewing? On a subscription basis or for a one-off transaction fee? There was strong consumer resistance to entering credit card details for sums under $5. But iTunes found the solution for monetising music downloads and the road map opened up.

Today, Auteur TV is both a Consultancy and a Production company. We specialise in providing multi-camera live web streaming for events and conferences and offer a range of High Definition ‘shoot and edit’ production packages.
