Some Technical Info
Putting live action video on the internet is not complicated but it does have limitations.
The primary factor to consider, is the end-user’s connection speed. This means that to present video clips to the widest possible audience, several versions of the same content may need to be produced.
There are two principal ways of delivering media to your audience:
STREAMING or DOWNLOADING – and each has its pros and cons:
Streaming Media is the only way to transmit a live feed.
Streaming Media uses no space on viewer’s hard disk.
Streaming Media requires the Web host to have a streaming server.
Streaming Media breaks up if data rate exceeds connection speed.
Download Media requires no special web host server software.
Download Media gets through no matter how slow the connection.
Download Media puts copy of the movie on consumers hard disk – you lose control.
Another great use of this compression technology is the ability to send video files across the world quickly – no longer is it necessary to upload to costly satellites. This interview with opera conductor Richard Hickox was filmed in the morning and transmitted in Australia the next day.
